"Iris" is a vocal by American culling stone band Goo Goo Dolls. Originally written for the soundtrack of the 1998 film City of Angels, the song was after included on the ring's sixth album, Airheaded Up the Girl. The song was released as a single on April 1, 1998.

"Iris" has contributed greatly to the ring'due south success. After completing the commencement-edit on the film Metropolis of Angels, co-producer Bob Cavallo and his music producer son Rob Cavallo decided to accept along musical artists to a viewing to create the soundtrack. Bob took Alanis Morissette whilst Rob took the Goo Goo Dolls. The following morning Morissette called Rob, and asked him to produce the vocal "Uninvited" which she had written subsequently as a demo. Shortly later that same day, John Rzeznik chosen Rob with a song he had written chosen "Iris", a power ballad.[7] In a 2013 interview with Songfacts, lead singer Rzeznik explained how he wrote the vocal:

"I was thinking virtually the situation of the Nicolas Muzzle graphic symbol in the moving picture. This guy is completely willing to give upward his ain immortality, simply to be able to feel something very human. And I call back, 'Wow! What an amazing thing it must be like to dear someone so much that y'all give up everything to be with them.' That'southward a pretty heavy thought."[8]

Rzeznik named the song after country folk singer-songwriter Iris Dement, after he noticed her name in a concert listing in the LA Weekly paper.[9]

Commercial functioning [edit]

Upon its release, "Iris" became second of a cord of hits from the pic's soundtrack, Metropolis of Angels: Music from the Motility Pic. (The beginning was Alanis Morissette's "Uninvited" and the third was Sarah McLachlan'southward "Angel"). The song debuted at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart on Apr 18, 1998, and somewhen spent a record of 18 weeks at number one in Hot 100 Airplay. However it was not immune to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 because no commercial unmarried had been released. In Dec 1998, merely after the song'due south airplay had peaked, the rules inverse to allow airplay-but songs onto the chart. The Goo Goo Dolls performed "Iris" on October 20, 2001, at Madison Square Garden as part of The Concert for New York Urban center to enhance money for victims of the September 11 attacks.[10] [ better source needed ]

"Iris" was also an international hitting. It peaked at number five on the Irish gaelic Singles Chart and has since become the 19th biggest-selling unmarried of all time in Republic of ireland.[11] The song initially peaked at number 50 in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland in August 1998 before ascension to number 26 the post-obit year. On Oct 2, 2011, after performances by auditionees on The X Gene, the song re-entered the Britain Singles Chart at number three. In May 2013, the vocal charted at number 12 after information technology was covered by United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland's Got Talent contestant Robbie Kennedy.[12] Elsewhere, the song became a number-i striking in Italian republic (for ii weeks), Australia (for five weeks), and Canada (for 8 weeks), and information technology reached the top ten in Flanders and the Netherlands.

The Goo Goo Dolls are the only musicians to have iii songs on the list, two breaking the top ten and all three falling inside the acme 25. They are also the only musicians that accept back to back singles (Iris, 1998 and Slide, 1999) featured on the list.[15] In a revised list in October 2017, "Iris" still ranked in the elevation 10, at number eight.[16]
